Tunis, Tunisia - (April 10, 2018) China Satellite Navigation Office and Arab Information and Communication Technology Organization (AICTO) inaugurated the first overseas center of China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) - "China-Arab States BDS/GNSS Center" in Tunis, Tunisia, reported by China's Xinhua News Agency.
According to Ran Chengqi, director of the China Satellite Navigation Office, the establishment of the center is the pilot project between China and the Tunisia-based Arab Information and Communication Technology Organization (AICTO), an official governmental organization under the Arab League, which is aiming at promoting the international application of BDS System. “The center can work as not only a window to showcase the BDS but also a platform for promoting international exchanges and cooperation,” Ran added.
Mohamed Ben Amor, secretary general of AICTO, described the center as a unique technology project for the Arab region and the entire world. And AICTO will “enhance [its] cooperation with China in satellite navigation field to boost technological advance and economic development in the region.”
The BeiDou pilot project will help train satellite navigation scientists and develop the digital economy in Arab countries, said Khalil Amiri, Tunisia’s secretary of state for scientific research. “We are working closely with China to effectively access and develop win-win database services via BeiDou and other satellites for various uses.”
The China-Arab States BDS/GNSS Center also has an exhibition room to display China's BDS related achievements in terms of technologies, solutions, and products.
